MAMI Provides Interpreters for 'Give Kids a Smile' Event

Feb. 7, 2010 -- Some 90 children received free dental care Feb. 6 at a “Give Kids a Smile” event at Faxton-St. Luke’s Dental Health Center on Burrstone Road, Utica.

Organized by Faxton-St. Luke’s, Upstate Cerebral Palsy and Mohawk Valley Perinatal Network, “Give Kids a Smile” is a free dental clinic for children lacking access to dental health care.

The children came from Oneida and Madison counties and were identified by their school nurses. Dentists and dental staff volunteered their time to provide cleanings, exams, sealants and fouride varnish. They also referred the children to dental offices that could provide followup dental care.

Other sponsors were Excellus, Colgate University, Oneida-Herkimer County Dental Society, Kiwanis Club of Utica, and MAMI Community Interpreters.

MAMI provided medical interpreters for non-English-speaking immigrant and refugee families, and took photos of the event..
